Emeline

Submitted character story

Defining moment:
Emmeline: A Barmaid from a guild taverns known as The Starvling Flute located in the
Queendom of Brenine. Right next to the bridge leading to our beautiful Queendom’s palace. The
spectacular home of the soon to be betrothed Princess Brienne.
When asked,
“Who is Emeline?” This is what people have to say:
“She enjoys reading some of the tomes patrons have left behind in her free time around the bar.
I think she secretly uses it as a cover to eavesdrop on what people are saying though! But you
didn’t hear that from me!”
- A regular customer of TSF
“Oh, Em? Man she makes the best drinks in all of the Queendom! Has a good ear and some
good advice. Why this one time when I was talking about my Wife.. er… I mean…
”
- Ronald the
Toolsmith
“Oh Miss Emeline? She is one of my favorite customers. I always buy a n extra few dresses in
her size, just in case, y'know? She loves all things shiny, sparkly, and red!" Vivian- Blaidd
Clothier
“Eme is kind, bubbly, and a real spitfire when she gets in the zone of reaming out cranky old
people or gross creepy men. She hides a dark past she doesn’t really like to talk about from her
time living with her family on their farm. Something bad happened there that she refuses to talk
about? How would I know? She gets this dark and faraway look in her eyes whenever farms are
mentioned… eer… she probably wouldn’t like that I said anything! Forget that!”
- Malekai the
Cook at TSF
“Oh EMMMY!!!! Yea! She’s like my most favorite friend! Y’know! She’s always listening in on
conversations while reading those scrolls so I know she has the best gossip to give after we get
off of a long shift together. She seems to have a way with words. It’s kinda freaky how charming
she can be sometimes. It’s even weirder when it switches and the intimidation and sass comes
out. Oh but that’s my Em!”
- Adrielle a Barmaid at TSF
“Ah Emmeline. One of my hardest workers until the recent happenings after the procession. I
took her in when she was only 20. Said she came from the farmlands way down south. I have a
lot of customers asking when she will return so they can talk to her. Although I’d never tell the
little thing, I love her like I love my own daughter. She came to me saying she was searching for
knowledge, comfort, and camaraderie. I hope she finds that wherever she is heading next as
well.
” Helga- Owner of TSF
“Emeline is cute but I try not to think about it too much. I see her getting into people’s business
and I respect her for how she helps this place, but I don’t feel the same way she does, if she
does. I see her flirting and I’d rather not.
” Theodore the Bouncer at TSF

BACKSTORY:
Emeline Baronz is the first-born daughter of Annalee and Emre Baronz. One night soon
before turning 18, her parents told her to come outside with them as it was finally time for her to
learn the family farm’s secret to why their crops rarely die or get sick with disease. She had
always believed it to be due to the diligent work of cousins or other workers as to why the farm
was so plentiful every harvest season.
She had slept through the ding of her spoon, and only awoke once the candle had
gotten close to its base and the smell of burning wood near her bed woke her from slumber. She
remembered her parents had told her to come outside and panicked. Racing to pull on her
robings, touch her pendant, and peek in on her siblings as they slept, she raced out the front
door and into the cooler night air.
Rounding the house, she stopped in her tracks. Off in the distance she saw the
silhouette of two figures, whom she presumed to be her parents, standing with their backs
turned toward her. She started to walk towards them, a little breathless, and they turned.
Startled at her sudden appearance and with no way to ease her in, they turned toward her with
sickly sweet smiles and honey coating their poisonous words.
“Hi sweetie! We wanted to wait for you to join us but it was getting late and we needed to
start” her mother said as she held her hands behind her back. What was visible was dark and
sticky looking.
“Your mother and I know you’ll be the next of us to take over the farm. The Blood moon
before every harvest, we have to come out and do this for the Goddess!” Her father exclaimed
with an annatural lilt to his voice that raised hackles on the back of Emeline’s neck.
Emeline looked between the two of them, which upon closer inspection were covered in
blood, and started to slowly back away while keeping her eyes trained on who she thought her
parents were. She thought blood sacrifices weren’t real.
“Honey… don’t give us that look! I thought you loved this farm…
” her mothers words
trailed off in a way that didn’t imply that she was sad or disappointed, but was expecting this
reaction from her daughter. As if maybe this was her initial reaction when Emre told her however
many years ago.
Before her father could say something next, Emeline turned and ran. She didn’t know for
how far or how long she had run, but eventually she made it to the Blaidd Goliath. From there,
she caught fish from the waterside and made her way north. Having been from one of the most
well known farming families in the south, she wanted to stay away from the city for as long as
possible so her family wouldn’t be able to locate her.
She felt bad about not being able to say goodbye to her siblings, but whatever her
parents were doing didn’t sit right with her. She pondered and mused if she would ever get to
see them again as she made her way towards the forest behind Blaidd. Once there, she set up
a little camp for herself and started to live in the woods on her own.
Being a smaller than average halfling came with its perks and disadvantages. She was
able to hide well but couldn’t run very fast or very far. She stayed closer towards the outskirts of
the city. Not close enough that she would be noticed, but far enough she could remain isolated
but still dip into town to stay up to date on the current events.
One day about two years later while in town, Emeline met a large stranger with a bow on
his back. She was enamoured by its raw gorgeous beauty and the sheer power it exuded. She
asked the man if he taught, and he said no then asked her where her mother was. She laughed
and said she was a little big woman who took care of herself in the woods.
The man introduced himself as Griffith, paid for the stuff he was purchasing from the
vendor they were standing in front of, and started walking. Emeline stood frozen until she heard
“come on” and she followed along after him. They talked some and he agreed after swapping a
few stories to teach her how to use a bow like him. He took her to a toolsmith in town and
helped outfit her with a bow. When she pouted and asked why she couldn’t use his, he said it
was too big for her vertically challenged frame. She accepted the bow from him without further
comment. She chose a beautiful red wood varnish and continues to use the bow and his lesson
to this day.
After he was done teaching her the hunting lessons, he offered to take her on his ship up
northeast to help her escape from whatever she was clearly avoiding. Although hesitant at first,
the few weeks she had gotten to know him he had proven to be trustworthy. She graciously
accepted his offer of passage to the north and they took down her encampment together. A few
short days later they had sailed towards Port Aleia.
There, Griffith and Emeline parted ways. But, not before he took her to The Starvling
Flute for a meal. They ate and he paid. He had noticed the help wanted poster out front and
when he finished paying, he asked if he could speak to the owner about their sign. Helga came
to the bar and told him he wouldn’t be right for a bar maid position. He pointed over toward
Emeline and asked what about her, and explained a bit of the situation. Helga’s face softened as
she nodded and then shook hands with Griffith before he walked back to their table.
“You’ll be working here from now on to earn your keep, got it?” He told her simply, never
one for too many words. She nodded and got up to hug him before he left.
“Go talk to that nice
lady over at the bar. She’ll help you.
” and with that, he was on his way out.
Emeline went over to Helga and they introduced themselves. Helga told her about her
new job duties, the apartment that would be coming out of her paycheck, and that if she ever
has any issues to never hesitate to come to her
