Xyrkrana is very good at looking like she meant to do that. It became a survival skill after a wild surge won a battle she was certain her side had already lost. People called her chosen. They asked for blessings, speeches, another miracle. She smiled for all of it, while trying to remember which part she had actually done on purpose.

She follows the Changebringer with a journal at her hip and a coin she flips before important decisions. The coin gets a vote. Xyrkrana still makes the choice. A golden quill tattoo on her left forearm is Hadiya's handy quill and her favorite weapon, despite the rather impressive jeweled mace on her back. The crystal clusters in her right arm are harder to explain, so she wraps them and changes the subject with confidence.

Now an account of that battle is being used to recruit frightened people for another one. Commander Ostel wants his miracle back. Xyrkrana wants the surviving battle report, especially the pages that were removed before the celebration. She is considering a paladin's oath, but first she needs to learn what she can promise without pretending. There is real courage beneath the performance. She just wishes somebody would give it a smaller audience.
