Xochitl

Submitted character story

You are a ranger who walks The Blackfen and answers threats with The Quiet Strategist's patience, never louder than necessary. What brought you back was a blink dog who died saving fawns, teaching you that protection matters more than belonging. You carry the weight of every creature you couldn't reach in time, every track that went cold, every silence where there should have been breath. Tables will remember you as the one who solved problems before they became bloodshed, deadly when it mattered, invisible when it didn't.

Defining moment: Xochitl was born beneath stone and stealth as a Drow, but the cavern's iron rules never fit the slow, listening habits of her heart. She slipped away before long, following roots of moonlight up into the surface forests and learning to move where shadows met starlight. The wild took to her in ways her kin could not: birds stilled when she passed, foxes circled at a cautious distance, and the whisper of wind taught her to read the world like a map. She found a companion in a blink dog with fur like dusk and eyes that trusted without question. Together they hunted not for sport but for balance—Xochitl honing the Ranger's craft into a private, precise devotion: tracking by scent and spoor, reading the tempo of other people's movements, and slipping through danger as a Gloomstalker moves through an unlit corridor.

Loss carved her quieter. The blink dog died protecting a clutch of injured fawns from poachers—one save that cost everything—and Xochitl carries the memory like an old wound that never weeps but never heals. It made her more resolute in small, practical ways: she intervenes where she can, mends a broken shelter, drives off a predator, guides a lost child back to camp, yet she never seeks company or praise. She is stern and mysterious to strangers, more inclined to listen than to speak, but her actions reveal an easier truth—she loves the living things of the world harder than most, and her loyalty, once given, is absolute. Now she wanders the borderlands between town and wild, a dark-cloaked guardian who reads tracks as easily as faces and honors her fallen blink dog by keeping other creatures safe.
