Changeling / Warlock

Submitted character story
Vex is never quite sure who she is.
As a Changeling, her true form is a rare and unsettling thing — pale, featureless, unfinished-looking, like a portrait abandoned before the artist gave it a face. She keeps it buried. Locked beneath layers of borrowed skin and stolen expressions. To look like yourself when you are made to be someone else feels, to Vex, like a kind of nakedness she cannot bear.
Instead, she lives in faces.
She wears three with any real comfort, cycling through them the way others cycle through moods. Each one is a mask, yes — but also a language. A way of speaking a version of herself she cannot say plainly. And in every form, without fail, a loose clump of silver hair remains — tucked behind an ear, falling across a brow, escaping a braid. She never bothers to change it. Maybe she can't. Maybe she doesn't want to.
Riley is the face she puts on when she wants the world to leave her alone — or when she wants to watch it flinch. A stocky human woman with a jaw like a clenched fist and eyes that have already decided they don't like you. Riley is foul-mouthed, blunt to the point of cruelty, and carries herself like someone who has been wronged by everyone in the room and is keeping a running tally. People avoid Riley. That is, precisely, the point. When Vex needs walls, she builds Riley.
Sable is the tiefling. Violet-skinned, with short curling horns lacquered black and a smile that enters the room three seconds before she does. Sable is all warmth and wicked charm — a hand on your arm, a laugh too close to your ear, a compliment that somehow makes you feel like you are the lucky one. She is dangerously easy to trust. Vex uses Sable when she needs something, or someone, and she isn't proud of how well it works. Of all her faces, Sable frightens her most — because wearing her is the closest Vex ever comes to enjoying herself.
Maren is the half-elf. Sharp-eyed, soft-spoken, with ink-stained fingers and the particular exhausted patience of someone who has read every book in the room and is now waiting for everyone else to catch up. Maren asks careful questions and gives measured answers. She takes notes. She is the face Vex wears when she needs to think, or when she needs others to take her seriously without getting close enough to look too hard. There is something tender hidden in Maren — a curiosity about the world that might, if Vex were honest, belong to her and not the mask at all.
The silver hair moves between them all. A thread of continuity. A signature she leaves in every forgery. Whether it is habit or confession, even Vex couldn't tell you.
