Defining moment:
For Tilly Sweetwater, the memory that anchors her soul and defined exactly who she is didn't happen in a warm, welcoming halfling kitchen, nor did it happen in a sparkling fairy grove. It happened in the suffocating, pitch-black depths of the briar-choked valleys, the exact moment she found Cora.
Before that day, Tilly was a perpetual outsider. She was a three-foot-tall anomaly who didn't fit the cozy, predictable molds of her traditional community, and her fairy heritage only made her feel more disconnected from the world. She had wandered into those dark, tangled woods feeling entirely unseen, lonely, and directionless, wondering if she would ever find a place where she truly belonged.
Then, she heard the sound: a low, desperate, agonizing whimper cutting through the gloom.
Pushing through a wall of vicious, tearing thorns, Tilly found a creature the world would later view with terror; a massive serpent-tiger, tangled hopelessly in the blood-stained briars, its glittering green and gold scales torn, and its lethal viper fangs bared in a mixture of agony and defence. Anyone else would have run. Anyone else would have seen a monster.
But Tilly looked into Cora’s eyes and saw her own reflection. She saw a creature entirely misunderstood by the world, completely alone, and trapped by a harsh reality it didn't deserve.
Without a second thought, Tilly stepped into the darkness. She ignored the thorns cutting into her own skin and the very real danger of those venomous fangs. She spoke to the beast with a voice full of fierce, quiet empathy, using the deep, natural magic buried inside her. As she patiently cut and untangled the briars, Cora’s defensive growls melted into a soft, trembling surrender. When the final vine snapped, the great beast didn't strike; instead, she leaned her massive, heavy head into Tilly’s tiny hands, seeking comfort.
That is the memory that pulls Tilly back from the dark. It’s the moment she realised her isolation wasn't a curse, it was a calling. She wasn't just a stray wanderer; she was a protector of the fierce, the forgotten, and the misunderstood. In saving Cora, Tilly found her purpose, her partner, and her true self. Whenever the shadows creep in or the weight of the world feels too heavy, she remembers the warmth of those gold-and-green scales against her palms and the realisation that she will never have to walk the wilds alone again.
