Sir Raul de Morien

Submitted character story

Nobody in the party has ever seen Raul's face. Helmet stays on. Always. He eats alone. He sleeps in the armor. Hamhunch tried to sneak a peek once while Raul was washing up at a river and Raul heard him coming from forty feet away and just said 'don't' in a voice that ended the conversation permanently.

He's a Bretonnian knight errant. Full plate, blue plume, heater shield with a red griffin on green, a tabard in blue and red diamond check, and a longsword with a gold crossguard shaped like a starburst. Everything about him screams heraldry and chivalry and old world honor. He speaks in formal address even when ordering a drink. He has never once used a contraction. The party finds this both impressive and deeply irritating.

His oath is vengeance. He won't say against who. He won't say what happened. All we know is he left Bretonnia alone, on foot, heading in a direction that he has not deviated from in two years of game time. Whatever he's walking toward, he intends to kill it.

He's the moral center of the party which is funny because his oath is literally about revenge. But he holds the line every fight. Shield up, sword forward, Hamhunch behind him, Gunnar somewhere off to the side doing something reckless. Raul doesn't yell. He doesn't inspire. He just stands where the danger is and refuses to move. That's his whole thing.

Our DM has a face reveal planned for a later session and the table has been speculating for months. My bet is scars. Our rogue thinks he's secretly not human. Hamhunch's player thinks he's just ugly. Raul's player won't even hint. He just smiles behind his screen and says nothing.
