Shmevulok

Submitted character story

Shmevulok did not enter this world through birth as the surface races do, but rather sprouted directly from the rich, damp earth. Upon emerging from the soil, he wasn't met by a mother’s embrace, but by the warm, protective canopy of the forest he calls the Mother Tree. To him, the woods were never just a place; they were his family. Every ancient trunk, every winding root, and every whisper of the wind served as the mentors that taught him the language of the wild and the eternal cycles of life. This bond remains so profound that to this day, whenever he leaves a grove, he softly whispers "thank you for everything" to the trees.
For most of his life, Shmevulok lived as a solitary shadow wandering through the dense greenery. He formed no emotional bonds, neither good nor bad, finding a sense of wholeness in his isolation. It was within this deep silence that the primal power of nature chose him, flowing through his fungal form and awakening his druidic gifts. He never sought power; he simply learned to exist in perfect harmony with the world around him. However, this peace was shattered the day he first encountered humanity. A large group of men, blinded by terror at the sight of a creature they had never seen before, attacked him without hesitation. Though Shmevulok is a pacifist at heart, the raw instinct of survival took over. He fought back with the strength of the forest itself, and by the time the dust settled, he had killed many of them.
This act of violence is a weight he carries in his heart every day. While he knows he fought to survive, the memory of those lost lives haunts his dreams, where he often retreats to the comforting scents and cozy nights of his home forest. He harbors no resentment toward humans, for in his mystical wisdom, he understands that their actions were born of fear and confusion rather than true malice. His greatest secret is the fear that his current companions might see him as a dangerous monster if they ever learned of his past. To mask this heavy burden, he often finds himself in absurd situations while trying to navigate "civilized" life. The most famous story involves his adoptive father, who tried to teach him the trick of a "dine and dash"—leaving a high-end restaurant without paying the bill. However, due to a massive misunderstanding, Shmevulok panicked and tried to bolt the moment the very first course hit the table. Now, he is often remembered not as a survivor of tragedy, but as the confused mushroom man who tried to run away before the main course even arrived.
