Ruger Wyldog

Submitted character story

Background: Folk Hero
He is the kind of man whose reputation arrives long before he does. Tales paint him as a mercenary, privateer, adventurer, musician, and occasional troublemaker, and somehow every story is true.

Standing broad-shouldered and weathered from years spent on the road, at sea, and in countless camps beneath open skies, Ruger carries himself with the confidence of someone who has survived more than his fair share of danger. His clothing is practical and worn from travel rather than polished for show. He favors sturdy gear, reliable weapons, and the sort of equipment that has earned its place through use rather than appearance. Though capable of looking intimidating at first glance, his easy smile and quick wit quickly reveal a far more approachable soul.

Unlike many sellswords, Ruger is guided by a deeply rooted sense of honor. He keeps his word whenever possible, pays his debts, and fiercely protects those he calls friend. Gold may buy his sword, but it cannot buy his loyalty once it has been given elsewhere. He believes a person's character is measured not by their victories, but by how they treat those who cannot repay them.

Beneath his rugged exterior lies the heart of a hopeless romantic. Ruger finds beauty in unusual places—a rare flower growing between stones, an old song remembered around a campfire, a strange piece of artwork hanging in a forgotten tavern. He is drawn to the weird, the wonderful, and the stories hidden within them. While many warriors seek trophies, Ruger collects memories.

Music is one of the few things he treasures as much as friendship. His hurdy-gurdy and Merlin guitar are constant companions on his travels. Whether entertaining a crowded tavern, lifting spirits after a hard battle, or playing quietly beneath the stars, Ruger uses music to express what words often cannot. His songs range from rowdy drinking tunes to heartfelt ballads that leave listeners unexpectedly emotional.

Among companions, Ruger is known for his endless stream of jokes, puns, and playful banter. Even in desperate situations he can usually find something worth laughing about. Some mistake this for carelessness, but those who know him understand the truth: humor is his way of carrying burdens without letting them crush him. He believes morale is as important to survival as any sword or shield.

When battle comes, however, the joking stops. Ruger becomes focused, determined, and protective. He places himself between danger and those under his care without hesitation. Years of mercenary work have taught him how to fight, but it is loyalty that drives him. He would rather suffer a wound himself than watch a companion fall.

Those who travel with Ruger soon learn that he is a man of contradictions—a hardened fighter who writes poetry, a mercenary with a conscience, a dreamer who survives harsh realities, and a romantic who refuses to become cynical despite everything he has seen.

Wherever the road leads next, Ruger Wyldog walks it with a song in his heart, a joke on his lips, and the unwavering determination to leave the world a little brighter than he found it.
