"story": "A character I've used as a player but has seen her longest use as an NPC in my own Anglo-Saxon themed setting: The Shaded Isles.\n\nAn anomaly to her surroundings, her short, petite frame stands garbed in what could only be described as the uniform of a maid so splendid in appearance-and yet so uniquely typical-that one could almost swear it were a costume of a theatre play. \nWith her blonde hair, her delicately rounded features, bright blue eyes, and the overall appearance of fragility, one could be easily forgiven if they were to have mistook her for an adorable little porcelain doll…\n\nThe deaf and mute youngest daughter and second youngest of seven in the prestigeous, merchantile Tain family. River was born with a degenerative illness which saw her losing her hearing at a very young age and, privately seen as a weakness by her family. She was largely kept out of public view until her coming-of-age at 16 when she was sent away out of shame by her mother (though River will not admit it to herself) to the prestigious 'Ealanean Academy of Service Arts', where she learned all manner of skills useful to life as a high-class maid, including the arts of defensive combatives in service as a bodyguard. Now recently graduated with top marks, she hopes to find employment so that she may prove her value to her family.\n\n<Gameplay>\nRiver communicates primarily by her mastery of lip reading and writing but also through a method which could best be compared to 'beating up Thieves' Cant with a belt' as a heavily-limited, and very primitive, form of sign language for others who might be proficient. She serves the party-or someone specifically in it-as a hireling, taking only her wage allotment of 2 gold a day as her only share of whatever is made by the party, as she is a maid, not a mercenary, and she is ultimately only doing her job. She will accept gifts and bonuses if pressed but will never ask for more than the regular pay she has been contracted for. In combat, her primary role is to serve as a dodge tank next to her employer(s), using a third-party subclass, 'Way of The Watchful Gate', which focuses on using the dodge action and punishing those who try to strike the ones she protects. \nRiver regularly writes to her mother back home. My session recaps when playing as her are written through this lense.\n\nRiver's story arc deals heavily with her self-confidence, slowly dripping her insecurities into her letters home as the campaign grows in stress until it comes to a head when the party stumbles onto her large collection of letters, revealing to the characters (and their players) that she has never sent a single one of the letters home to her family, which prompts her to come clean to the table about her personal fears and insecurities about herself and her value to her family and lead into her bringing the party with her to visit home.\nThough there are many potential outcomes, with appropriate support, the best one may be achieved where she might finally stand up for herself against the cruel dismissiveness of her mother and ultimately decide to live for herself, instead of the family who has shown her nothing but contempt."
