"story": "This is my PC for my first ever (ongoing!) dnd campaign. \n\nRenly Saavo. Sergeant of the famed Dawn Patrol mercenary company, and Hero of the Black Crusade. Songs were sung in the taverns of the Free Cities after the war, reliving the charge of the Light Cavaliers that broke the Army of Bane, freeing the people from the darkness that had held the realm in its black iron grasp for years. People swooned at the image of the gallant soldier who had rallied the troops behind him.\n But Renly didn't care for any of that. If he could, he'd go back and do it all over.\nnot for more glory, but to save those he lost.\n Renly had never intended to be at the fore of history. He was still stunned on most days that the academy had even accepted the simple son of merchants. Of course the tourney victory might of played a part in that. A contest he was never meant to enter, had it not been for a certain voices doubting one of his upbring he could even learn swordplay. Many were not amused, some wanted to throw him in the stockade for the disrespect...had it not been for his mentor stepping in and taking him under wing. \"To shake things up.\" Captain Janus had said. \n They never learned to listen to him. Nobles always believe they knew the best course of action. So when Renly noticed a pass undefended on the maps, he knew it would be a problem. But it wouldn't be where the glory of open battle take place, they told him. None could be spared watching some forgotten gate they yelled, the final battle was at hand.\n Fine then.\n If the royal army didn't care about guarding the pass and the villages beyond, Renly would gather and fund his own militia, grown from the true strength of the land: the common folk, the same stock Renly had come from. They would take arms and defend their home a well as anyone else, to prove that it wasn't blood or pedigree that made a hero.\n How ironic then, that a messenger would beg Renly to return to the main host. They needed his ability to think outside the box, and the personality to lead men who were disillusioned with their noble \"betters\". Renly snorted, no he belonged here. Among the people he had never forgotten and those who had never lost faith in him. Let the nobles claim all the glory, he said.\n But to his surprise, it was those closest to him who convinced him to go. Have faith in us, know that we wont break as easily as the nobles believe we will. We will show them the strength we carry, so they will never forget the true lifeblood of the land. Besides, as Renly had noted: this pass was too small for a main force to decide to attack, so it should be pretty boring anyways right?\n When Renly routed the wing of the Black Crusade, he couldn't help but think how much smaller the enemy army seemed. Over the cheers of the royal army, a sinking feeling grew in the pit of his stomach. The scouts had reported more than double than the force that they had faced. Surely they couldn't make such a mistake......\n Renly spurred his horse with reckless abandon. That smoke in the distance.... it couldn't be. But the other knights that followed had thought Renly was looking to run down stragglers, add more notches to his belt. In no way would he claim such honor himself, this day would be immortalized in legend! So when they entered this pass they didnt recognize, the last thing they expected was to see the backs of another army! With a thunderous crash, the slivery knights tore into this force of foes. They were fleeing, yes! Of course! Why else would they not be facing the knights? The cowards all! And there in the front was Renly Saavo, a force of fury, slaying all before him. The knights cheered on this new legend born.\n But none of these cheers reached him. He didn't fight out of righteous anger, but desperation. This army wasn't fleeing no, the opposite....\n They were attacking. Attacking a forgotten outpost, one that was never supposed to be manned. Attacking a force that was never meant to be here, instead they held out and stalled their approach. And Renly had left them. Forgotten them.\n With the last of the Black Crusade fleeing, the knights returned to camp sing songs of valor. Renly fought the hands that pulled him along with them. His mind was still there, amongst the bodies at the gate. He didn't hear the accolades being bestowed to him. The cheers and pageantry rang hollow to him as they paraded to the Royal Castle. Never was the sacrifice of the common folk mentioned. No mourning for those forgotten. But Renly could never forget. Every honor was a reminder of those he left behind. \n He was supposed to be granted a title that day, written into the annals of history. Instead, as the music soared, he slipped into the shadows and disappeared. Each shining medal was a mockery, a life cut short because of him. He had paid no price, just like the very nobles he distained. So, he removed all traces of of his actions, as well as himself. Let the others bask in the glory; let me fade away like I deserved, was his thought.\n Out on the Frontiers, life is harsh and always dangerous. But those who brave it, do so for a reason. Some have little choice and are forced to start fresh, for others because opportunities beckon. And then for some, this rugged land is a way to forget. And maybe....just maybe make amends for those they let down while making a profit while trying to repay past mistakes."
