Primal is the piece of the mind that exists beyond reason and thought, he lives and dies by every twisted impulse and protective effort. His job is protection and release; he keeps the mind steady and straight, he evaluates surroundings before thought can form, and reads people before they've even stepped into the room.

When Eldest's mind shattered, he felt the bonds to his brothers and sisters go hollow, and along with that, most of his memory as well, but he knows his purpose. So he hunts, not for prey, not for glory or wealth, but because he has to find what's missing, and protect what he knows is his.
