"story": "Born second beneath the same desert moon as her twin brother Khemet, Neferet grew up knowing that people are better together than apart. She introduced herself as Effie before she could explain why, and she never stopped calling her brother Emmett even as he complained about it every time. When cultists captured the twins in a forgotten desert tomb, something inside her changed, though she left what happened there buried with the ruins. What she carried out was a certainty: if people could be that cruel, they must hold equal capacity for the opposite. She became a witch under the quiet guidance of an old Tabaxi woman in the harbour city of Narva, learning that community is the spell, hospitality is the most precise magic there is, and curses are medicine, administered carefully, never in anger, but in decision. Narva shaped her in other ways, too. She fell in love there, easily, openly, and more than once. To Effie, love is not a finite thing to be divided. It grows when given freely, and she has never seen a reason to give it any other way. She left pieces of herself in that city and carries pieces of it with her. She writes letters. Most of them write back. She travels now because her community was threatened by the blight and someone had to do something. She extends trust like it costs nothing. Sometimes it costs everything. She does it anyway. She carries a jerboa in her pocket, her brother raised it from the dead, and its eyes have glowed faintly purple ever since. She still owes him for that. She intends to spend her whole life cheerfully repaying it."
