Long, long ago, there was a man. A man that had died. A man whose sins of his life had caught up to him and dragged him into the fiery pits of Hell. In these pits, he was exposed to torment, agony, and suffering, and the worst part of all was that he couldn’t remember why he was being punished. Not because he didn’t think that what he had done in life was bad, but because the demons torturing him had taken away the memories of his life. Because if one can’t remember why they’re being punished, the torture only becomes worse.
But you can only push someone down for so long until they finally rise back up. And that’s exactly what this soul did. After at least a hundred years, the soul did something none of the demons thought was possible: he killed his demon tormentor by choking them with the very chains they used to torment him.
Shocked by this act, the demons of Hell could only stare at the body of one of their own, struggling to comprehend how a mere mortal soul could accomplish such a thing. While they argued among themselves over how to address and contain this soul’s remarkable will, the soul was not yet done. As the demons were distracted and in a state of worry, they hadn't noticed the soul had slipped away, escaping the infernal pit of Hell and back into the mortal plain.
The soul, now a wandering specter, traversed the living world and eventually found a skeleton holding a metal cane. The specter possessed these bones and used them as a new means to interact with the world in a more physical way. In this new form, the skeletal specter was discovered by a primitive, but spiritual tribe that mistook him for a deity they worshiped. It was here that the specter finally found comfort and peace. The spirit felt a particular connection to the tribe’s shaman, who showed him magical spells and rituals that amazed him, and told him tales of creatures that seemed greater than the demons he had seen in Purgatory. But one day, the specter found the shaman performing a dark ritual that turned the very shadows beneath one’s feet into monsters.
As the shadow monsters began to slaughter the tribe’s people, the specter searched through the shaman’s scrolls for a way to send them back. He found that the shadows demanded a damned soul for their loyalty, and the shaman had planned to use the specter as payment. But it was that detail that showed the specter exactly how to stop them. By taking the shaman’s scrolls, the specter had taken control of the shadows himself, and he ordered them to return from whence they came, in exchange for a damned soul… the shaman’s! For he knew that by summoning these monsters to kill his people, the shaman had doomed his own soul.
Although the tribe's people were saved from the frightening shadow monsters, seeing the specter perform the same dark magic the shaman had used, they now feared him as well. So to free them of their newfound fear of him, the specter left. But this experience with dark magic did leave an impression on him. Because while this dark magic was as frightening as it was powerful, he was surprisingly good at it, so perhaps he could actually do some good with it.
As years went by, the specter studied more and more magic, from ancient texts to lost tomes. He even went so far as to study the nature and anatomy of monsters, and the like that came from the darkness, learning all their secrets. Eventually, the specter began using this knowledge against other supernatural monstrosities, using their own power against them and exploiting their weaknesses. Over the centuries, his legend began to grow to the point that there were very few monsters who didn't know who he was. He became the thing that vampires warn their young to look out for, he became the man that werewolves feared and ran from, he became the thing that ghosts worry is hiding in the dark, he became the nightmare to nightmares, he became THE SPECTER INSPECTOR. A title that he finds annoying and stupid, so he simply answers to Mr. D.
Even the demons of Hell recognized how dangerous and powerful Mr. D had become, and while they were worried about him before, now they were terrified of him. But dispite this, they continued to send their own agents and warriors to try and destroy him. But Mr. D was always too smart, too prepared, too strong, too powerful, too VICIOUS for them to take back.
Today, Mr. D acts as an occult detective and monster hunter, tracking down cases that pique his attention. Cases he suspects were caused or connected to something dark magic related or something else supernatural. Using his knowledge, his magic, his cunning, and sometimes the blunt end of his cane, Mr. D will track down whatever dark forces find themselves on his radar, and when he finds them, he will use what he's learned to END THEM.
