Masrey Koval

Submitted character story

Masrey grew up in a small, independent city-state near an entrance to the Underdark. His people were not Lolth-sworn, but they could be every bit as violent as the Spider Queen’s followers. They were, however, more lenient on their household servants, which Masrey acted as until he came of age to take on his role as the first born son of his house. As such, Masrey had time to himself, and time to leave the grounds, which he used to escape to the upper world, where he met a human boy named Matthias.
After the initial distrust and arrogance instilled in him by drow society, Matthias was able to get past Masrey’s guard, and the two became quick friends, and eventually lovers. Masrey had been saving up to leave the Underdark for years on his meager allowance, and Matthias took him in when he finally ran away, narrowly escaping an execution for his disobedience.
The two of them moved away from Matthis’ hometown, leaving behind his father’s smithy, in order to live somewhere safer, where the drow wouldn’t have such easy access to them for raids. They settled in a village called Whitepeak, and opened a smithy together, in the same name as Matthias’ family smithy. It was here that Masrey took Matthias’ last name, as a show of their dedication to each other, and as a way to distance himself from his past.
They lived out the rest of Matthias’ life peacefully in Whitepeak, until his death. Stricken by grief, Masrey made sure everything was in order, left the smithy to an apprentice’s family, and left Whitepeak. He spent almost two centuries wandering Faerun, looking for a meaning to life, before returning to Whitepeak and reclaiming the smithy, although he still made time to go off on adventures.
It was on his way home from one of these adventures that the illithids captured him, and the next thing he knew, he was waking up in the nautiloid.
A dark, quiet figure, small and lithe, and underneath it all, deeply sad. Running from something. Those he considers family, originally Matthias and Marie, and later those he traveled with, among them a warforged who seemed to view him as an older sibling, and one of the Firbolgs he stayed with.
