Lyara hunts monsters for a living and is frightened that she belongs on the list. Her mother was a vampire, her father human, and the hunger is something she has to choose around every day.

She is usually cheeky about everything. It works until somebody notices how young she is, how tired she looks, or how quickly she checks whether anyone has seen her teeth. A ghoul left the scar across her temple and took part of her ear. Norea gave her blood to keep her alive, then gave her a reason to want to be.

Norea is dead now. Lyara went to her grave beneath the dark star expecting to be alone, and the ghost of the woman she loved put her arms around her. Only Lyara can see her. Give them a haunting that asks what a spirit needs, or a contract that forces Lyara to decide what makes a monster. She still carries the crossbow, the potions, and her old master's amulet. She would like to believe that means she has a way forward.
