Defining moment:
Lennox Sinclair was born human—sharp-eyed, quick-footed, and fiercely protective of the two people who mattered most: her younger brother, Blair, and her best friend, Maeve. When a vampire began preying on their village, the three of them set out together to hunt it down. They were young, confident, and still believed courage and a good blade or arrow could solve anything.
As night fell they took shelter in a shallow cave, laughing quietly as they shared the last of their rations and planned the final stretch of the hunt. Lennox had just stepped outside to check the perimeter when she heard it—a low, wet snarl that did not belong to any animal she knew. Panic seized her. She ran.
Only after the trees had swallowed her did the full horror of what she had done crash over her: she had left Blair and Maeve behind in the dark.
She forced herself to turn back. The screams reached her first—short, desperate, then abruptly cut off. When she finally staggered into the cave mouth, absolute blackness greeted her. She inched forward, heart hammering, until a single candle flame flared to life.
The light revealed everything.
Maeve’s body lay crumpled against the wall, throat torn open, eyes still wide with the last flash of betrayal. Blair was sprawled nearer the entrance, his hunting knife still clutched in a hand that would never move again. Blood painted the stone in dark, glistening arcs.
A cold breath brushed the nape of her neck. A deep, velvet voice slid into her ear like a blade:
“Your turn.”
What followed was not a clean death. The vampire did not simply kill her. It fed, and in the feeding it poured its own cursed blood into her veins—whether as mockery, experiment, or cruel whim, she never learned. She woke days later in the same cave, alone among the cooling bodies of the two people she had failed. Her heart no longer beat. Her reflection no longer answered. The hunger that clawed at her was no longer human.
The pointed ears, the unnatural grace, the centuries that would stretch ahead of her—all of it came later, twisted gifts of the curse and the long, lonely years that followed. But the core of Lennox remained the same: the girl who ran, the sister who returned too late, the friend who carries two graves inside her chest.
She still hunts the night. Not for glory. Not for justice. Only for the slim, bitter chance that one day she might find the creature that whispered those two words… and make it understand what it means to be left alone with the dead.
