"story": "Defining moment:\nThe Great Tree had been burning for hours by the time Jasper understood that there would be nothing left to return to.\n\nMost of the city had already been evacuated.\n\nThat was the only reason the royal army had not broken ranks entirely. The streets had emptied in waves as the warning spread from district to district, families carrying what they could, healers moving among them, guards directing people toward the old forest roads and the hidden paths beyond the valley. The young had been sent first. Then the elderly. Then anyone who could not fight.\n\nThe city had been built around the Great Tree for generations. Its immense roots formed the foundations of homes and halls, its living branches carried bridges and walkways high above the forest floor, and its hollowed chambers had held generations of elven history.\n\nNow, from the ridge where the remaining soldiers had gathered, Jasper could see smoke pouring from those same branches.\n\nIt wasn't ordinary fire.\n\nThere were no familiar tongues of orange.\n\nThe flames were black.\n\nThey crawled across the bark like living shadows, broken through every so often by veins of deep red that flashed within them like embers beneath a wound. Wherever the dark fire touched, leaves curled instantly into ash. Branches that had survived storms for centuries cracked and fell into the streets below.\n\nJasper stood beside his mother.\n\nLysira had not moved for some time.\n\nHer crown was gone. Her hair had come loose from its bindings. She wore armor over the clothes she'd left the palace in, and there was soot across one cheek.\n\nShe looked less like a queen than Jasper had ever seen her.\n\nMore like a mother who had been forced to stand still while her home burned.\n\nBehind them, more than half of the royal army waited in grim silence.\n\nThey had stayed because there were still people to protect.\n\nBecause there were still soldiers moving through the outer districts.\n\nBecause the magisters had insisted that the final defensive spell could hold.\n\nAnd because someone had to remain behind long enough to make certain that the roads out of the city remained open.\n\nArchetype: You're the The Cartographer's Vigil. He charts the way forward by refusing to forget what was lost.\n\nPersonality: Jasper is quiet, observant, and deeply thoughtful, with a calm, reserved demeanor that can sometimes make him seem more serious or distant than he actually is. He is extraordinarily competent and precise, especially when it comes to maps, navigation, and anything requiring careful attention to detail, and he tends to notice things other people overlook. He has a dry, understated sense of humor that comes out most often around people he trusts, and while he isn't particularly expressive with strangers, he is quietly affectionate and remarkably patient with those he loves. Jasper is fiercely loyal and protective without being controlling, preferring to help, anticipate needs, and simply be present rather than make grand declarations. He carries the weight of his past and the loss of his home very privately, channeling much of it into his meticulous cartography and his determination to make sure others can find their way home. Beneath all that composure, though, he's adventurous, curious, and a little bit mischievous—and with M especially, the centuries-old, dignified elf has a surprisingly soft tendency to indulge her silliness."
