"story": "Jall went into cryosleep as a human and woke up as something else. That's the short version.\n\nHe's from a planet called Thalyth Prime, where the local flora is aggressively curious and the locals develop small adaptations to cope. Shimmery skin. Better night vision. Minor stuff. Jall got all of that as a kid and then some. He was the kind of child who wouldn't leave a plant alone, the kind whose mother got called before the Botanical Ethics Committee for 'encouraging dangerous horticultural deviancy.' Plants liked him. They wanted to be near him. Nobody thought much of it until he went under for deep space cryo and woke up with a bone mask where his face used to be.\n\nThat mask is his actual face now. Permanent, alabaster, with a jagged grin carved across the lower half. Narrow slits where eyes should be, and behind those slits a red glow that pulses with his mood. Asymmetrical antlers of living coral branching out from his skull, tipped with crystals that hum when the light dims. Moss green hair that drifts like he's underwater even when he isn't. Crimson flowers blooming out of his shoulders and sometimes down his spine. The flowers grew into him. His circulatory system is theirs now.\n\nHe's not upset about this. That's the weird part. Jall woke up, took stock of his new situation, and decided it was kind of funny. He leans into it. Wears a slimming dark green suit with a red silk undershirt like he's attending a cocktail party at the end of the world. Poses for photos. Tells jokes. Makes the cryo techs laugh on his way out of the pod even though half of them are visibly unsettled by him.\n\nOn the ship he works agricultural on Deck 6. Plants lean toward him when he walks by. Failed crops come back when he tends them. He walks through spore clouds and radiation zones without flinching because nothing on this side of the galaxy can hurt him anymore. His antlers pick up atmospheric shifts before the sensors do, so the crew often knows there's a tremor or pressure change coming because Jall's coral starts vibrating before he does."
