The Evermere family carried an\nancient noble title, though little remained of the\ninfluence that had once accompanied it. Their\nwealth had steadily diminished over\ngenerations - spent maintaining appearances - and\ntheir name carried more historical significance than\npolitical value. Even so, Isolde was raised to believe\nthat the Evermeres had a duty to preserve what\nremained of their legacy.\nHer father devoted much of his life to restoring the\nfamily’s fortunes. He searched old records and\nnegotiated with distant relatives in the pursuit of\nforgotten claims to land and inheritance. Her mother\nmanaged the estate more directly, and oversaw\nIsolde’s education.\nAs she grew older, Isolde became increasingly\ninvolved in her father’s efforts to rebuild the family’s\nstanding among the region. She accompanied him\ninto neglected wings of the manor while they\nsearched for records that might support old claims.\nTogether they explored locked chambers and\nforgotten vaults that previous generations had left\nuntouched or had otherwise hidden away.\nWhen Isolde was seventeen years old, she\ndiscovered a hidden chamber concealed behind a\ncollapsed bookshelf in the oldest section of the manor\nlibrary. The room contained a myriad of journals and\nledgers, as well as correspondence that dated back\ncenturies.\nThe journals described a bargain that was made\ngenerations earlier with a being that dwelled within\nthe shadows between worlds. According to the\nwritings, the pact granted prosperity and influence to\nHouse Evermere. In exchange, one descendant in\neach generation would carry a fragment of the being’s\nessence.\nIsolde brought the journals to her father, believing\nthey revealed little more than the superstitions of a\ndistant ancestor. But her father’s reaction unsettled\nher. Rather than dismissing the contents, he admitted\nthat the stories were true. He explained that the\nfamily had benefited from the pact for generations and\nthat its influence had weakened over time. He\nbelieved their decline was directly connected to the\nbargain losing its hold.\nIsolde viewed the pact as a curse that had burdened\ncountless descendants, while her father saw it as the\nfoundation upon which their family had survived. The\narguments, along with the estate’s financial situation,\nworsened. And Isolde’s father became increasingly\ndesperate as creditors demanded repayment, the\nmanor’s servants departed, and portions of the manor\nitself fell into disrepair.\nAs the pressure mounted - and in spite of Isolde’s\noppositions - her father decided to renew the pact.\nKnowing well enough that such a deal could change\nhis family’s lives. Isolde argued that continuing the\npact would condemn future generations to the same\nfate. But her father refused to abandon what he\nviewed as the family’s last chance for survival.\nOn the night of the ceremony, Isolde descended into\nthe crypt determined to stop it. The ritual chamber\ncontained her father, several trusted retainers, and an\nelaborate circle of silver markings copied from the\nancient journals. As the ceremony progressed,\nshadows gathered unnaturally around the room.\nDarkness pooled across the floor and climbed the\nwalls as though it possessed a will of its own. Isolde\nstepped into the circle and disrupted the ritual,\nshattering the delicate balance of the ceremony. The\ngathered shadows erupted outward, filling the crypt\nwith violent supernatural energy. Several of the\nretainers were killed instantly while stone pillars\ncollapsed and the darkness surged toward Isolde.\nThey bound to her as a wave of power tore through\nthe crypt. Falling stone struck her father as he tried to\nprotect her, crushing his skull against the ground. By\nthe time the survivors escaped the ruins, the family\npatriarch was dead and much of the manor’s\nfoundation had been destroyed.\nIsolde’s recovery from the event stole weeks from\nher life, and her mother never found peace from her\nfather’s death. As life crept ever so slowly back to her,\nshe began to experience strange sensations. Voices\nspoke to her from empty rooms and dark corners.\nShadows moved independently of their sources.\nDreams carried her to strange landscapes where\ntowering silhouettes watched from impossible\ndistances. More troubling still, magical abilities\nawakened within her. Power answered her emotions,\noften manifesting without warning.\nRumours spread throughout the region regarding\nthe catastrophe beneath Evermere Manor. Local\nnobles distanced themselves from the family, and\ncreditors accelerated their demands. Within a year,\nthe remaining estate had been sold to satisfy the\ndebts.\nWhen the final brick of her family’s legacy crumbled\naway, she chose to leave behind the remnants of her\nformer life and travel beyond the lands that once\ndefined her family. Seeking to understand the nature\nof the being attached to her soul, and uncover the full\nhistory of the pact, in the hopes that doing so will\ndetermine whether others remain connected to the\nsame ancient force.\nEvery step she takes brings her closer to answers\nthat have been buried for centuries. She adventures\nbecause the consequences of her decision in the crypt\ncontinue to shape her future. The entity remains\nwithin her, its presence grows stronger whenever she\ndraws upon the magic it granted her.\nIsolde Evermere intends to find a solution before\nthat power consumes what remains of her life, and\nshe is willing to cross kingdoms and confront ancient\nhorrors to ensure that the Evermere legacy ends with\nher."
