Submitted character story
Hope is not a delicate bird in its cage, it is not a flickering candle flame about to go out. Hope is the first spark of an inferno, Hope is a sewer rat that bites and claws back from the brink of death to live one more day. Hope is the piece of the mind that keeps going, not because she is optimistic, or because she wants to, but because it is necessary, and to falter is to give up, to stay down is the ultimate failing, and she will not fail, not in the end at least.
When Eldest's mind shattered, Hope had been resting in the light, surrounded in the warm glow and the sounds of the wild, slipping from it and back to the bed she'd rented for the night. She rolled over, throwing an arm out searching, but found nothing, the space beside her empty and cold. Reaching out to the bond she knows should bind her, she finds it hollow, stretching her reach farther she finds the bonds between her brothers and sisters going hollow as well, the memory going with them. A steady ache building where they should be, then, her gaze catches on the bracelet around her wrist, the one dark as midnight or the deepest seas, the one made from the hair of someone she can't remember anymore. It tugs at that first hollow space she tried to tug at. Following that pull, she slips back into the light, exiting in the wild rather than the tavern and beginning to follow the pull, desperate to find what had been taken. She had been broken, again and again, but the point had always been getting back up, and she'd do so this time as well.
