Defining moment:
Pain drags him under. The present fades to black.
Then he is there again the beast pit beneath the Akroan sands. The weight of bronze on his wrists. The distant thunder of the crowd seeping through stone. The stench of old blood and frightened animals in the dark. His fingers trace a fresh tally mark. The bone in his hand is worn smooth from years of carving hate into Iroas's sacred metal.
A door opens. Light spills in, cutting through the gloom. A figure stands silhouetted amethyst skin, white hair, eyes that hold no fear, only calculation. The air prickles with something volatile. Wild magic, barely contained, dances in violet sparks and the taste of ozone.
A hand lifts.
The shackles flare white-hot. The hymns of Iroas etched into the bronze shriek without sound and then fall silent, split apart, clattering to the stone. The sudden lightness on his wrists is staggering. For the first time in years, his arms are his own.
Then the world blurs mountain passes, unfamiliar scents of earth and green things, the gradual warming of air that does not bite. Each step away from the ice feels like a betrayal of the cold that raised him.
Grass beneath his feet. Soft. Shifting.
He stops.
Before him stretches an impossible thing a living mirror of hammered silver under a pale sun, rolling and breathing and reaching to the edge of all existence. No walls. No mountains. No cage. Only water below and sky above, meeting in a line that goes on forever.
His legs buckle. His scarred hands still ringed with the broken remnants of his chains sink into the sand. His chest heaves. His eyes burn with something that is not rage. It is the ache of a door opening in a place he did not know existed. The beast who had only known the kill stares at the sea, and in the silence, a debt is carved deeper than any tally mark on bronze.
