Submitted character story
Faun was not like the other fairies of the Whisperwood. While they reveled in sunlight and the sweet scent of blossoms, Faun found herself drawn to the hushed murmurs of the nearby Moonpetal Lake. From a young age, she would sneak away, not to play amongst the reeds, but to dive deep into its cool, dark embrace. It was there, in the murky depths, that she first felt the call.
It started as a faint whisper, a siren song carried on currents unseen. Curiosity, a trait often discouraged among her kind, compelled her to follow. Deeper and deeper she ventured, past the roots of ancient willows and forgotten relics, until she reached a vast, echoing cavern. There, pulsating with an ancient, hypnotic light, lay an entity of pure abyssal energy. It was the Fathomless, a primordial being of the deep, restless and yearning for connection.
The pact was not forged in grand pronouncements or arcane rituals, but in a silent, profound understanding. Faun offered her freedom, her vibrant fae magic, and in return, the Fathomless offered her power — a taste of its boundless knowledge of the crushing depths and the secrets held within. Her sheer silver wings, once iridescent with forest hues, now bore swirls of deep blue, mirroring the arcane energy that coursed through her. Her laughter, once light and airy, now held an unsettling echo, and her crystal blue eyes, while still mischievous, held the chilling wisdom of the abyss.
Returning to the Whisperwood, Fawn found herself an outsider. The other fairies recoiled from the cold, deep magic that now clung to her like mist. Yet, Faun didn't care. She had found her true calling, a purpose far grander than weaving flower crowns or dancing in sunbeams. She was a bridge between two worlds: the whimsical realm of the fey and the terrifying, beautiful unknown of the deep. Her pact with the Fathomless was not a burden, but a liberation, allowing her to wield power that few fairies could ever comprehend, all while carrying a mischievous glint in her eyes that hinted at the profound, and sometimes dark, secrets she now possessed.
