Defining moment:
It was a normal day, with normal errands. Groceries for our elderly neighbor, dropping off tool repairs to the blacksmith, checking in at our shops across town to gather the days payments and deposit them at the bank. A normal day that turned into a late night. A last minute delivery. Urgent. Can't wait till morning. Father was insistent. He's never insistent. Things can always wait, things will always arrive when they're meant to, nothing goes wrong if your plan is simply to wait. But there was a tone, an urgency that was never there. So I went. A late night package to the underbelly of the town, the same tiny passageway, the same pungent smoke, the same vaguely creepy smuggler, only this time even he was spooked. Something in the town had shifted, and none of the locals liked it. He caught my hand as I slid the package to him, something that would have normally cost him a finger, but the fear on his face stayed my hand.
"Run."
It wasn't a suggestion.
"Run, kid. Run fast and hard. Don't go home. Don't even look. Just run."
And I did. Only I skipped the "don't go home" part.
20ft flames stretched across the sky, blacking out stars as the smoke rolled across the town. One building. Just one.
Home.
I've never run so fast in my life. I ran until my legs ached and my lungs burned. I ran until I could feel the heat of the flames. I ran until I was stopped, arms grabbing my waist, hands wrestling me into the dirt, boots planted firmly on my back, and cold iron locked firmly onto my wrists.
I still don't know if the screaming was mine or my family's.
