Fairy / Sorcerer

Submitted character story
“Everyone has this cheap, storybook idea of what they think the land of fairies is. It’s this happy world full of rainbows, glitter, gumdrops, and… whatever else makes kids happy at bedtime. And honestly? I understand why people imagine that, because everyone wants to believe there’s a place where nothing bad can happen and everyone is happy and safe. A place where you're free of danger. But guess what? That place doesn’t exist, and if it does, it’s sure as hell not the Fey Realm!”
“You know why I know that? Because every day I find something horrific and sick in the magical little dream land I call home. As an Officer of Fairy Law Enforcement, my job is to maintain the order between the Fey Realm and the Mortal Realm. That means that when a leprechaun tries to swindle some poor fool into giving up their firstborn kid in exchange for... I don't know, success? I gotta find that whisky-breathed creep and arrest him, cause we fairies aren’t supposed to whisk kids away anymore! You ever hear of the Pied Piper? We're still trying to find him. Of course, the Mortal Realm isn't always innocent when it comes to maintaing the order between our two realms. Say some wannabe wizard captures a fairy and wants to harness their power for something or pin their wings on a wall, I'm serious, I’ve got to find them, rescue the fairy before something really bad happens, and make sure that psychopath faces justice for his crimes. But most days, my assignments are messier than that because the WORST cases I get happen right here in the Fey Realm.”
“Sure I gotta keep the two realms from messing each other up, but most days my job is to investigate crimes here in my own realm and figure out who did it, and the part you’ll probably find shocking is because this is the Fey Realm, how innocent the people I arrest often look! Imagine walking in on a crime scene to find a giant Troll murdered in the park, and then learning he was killed by a tiny, sweet Sprite that smells like strawberries! The irony here is that you'd probably think the cute Spirte was the muder victim and the monstrous troll was the killer. And that's just the WHO, wait till you learn the WHY. After you gather all the evidence and question all your witnesses and suspects, you learn that the Troll was a professional gambler who had beaten the Sprite in a card game. And the Sprite, who was apparently a gambling addict, killed him because she needed the money back to pay off some dangerous people who were threatening to kill her! That’s every day of my life!”
“My first case was a teacher reporting one of her Satyr students missing. We questioned his parents, his friends, classmates, neighbors, it was like the kid just disappeared. Wanna guess where we found him? Chained up in his parents’ closet! Apparently, mommy and daddy had a very extreme way of disciplining their boy... by starving him! Honestly, it's a miracle we found him at all. I just wish we had found him sooner, he died less than an hour after I carried him out of that house. The point is that most days, while the crime itself is terrible, what’s worse is the people who commit them! See, everyone sees fairies as these little things that can do no wrong, but I've seen them do SO MUCH WRONG. Most of the worst people I've arrested never even look dangerous, but eventually you see what they're hiding and what they're really capable of. I really wish I could tell you that I’ve seen it all, but I’m always surprised by new things I see at a crime scene that I never imagined anyone was capable of.”
“And the thing is that now I still see that ugliness in people! I've had this job for so long and seen so many messed up crimes and murders that I see it everywhere! It's so hard to trust anyone because you can't believe there are any real good people in the world when you know the world itself is far from good."
"I bet by now you’re probably asking, ‘Why are you still doing this job?’ Well, that's a good question. I’ve been held hostage attempting to stop a home invasion, nearly killed while undercover, I've lost two partners, one killed in action, the other went bad, and I don’t even want to tell you about the things I see and experience when looking for serial killers. So why am I still here? Because I’ve got something I need to protect. One of the few good things in this disgusting world is my life partner, Miracle. You remember that ‘rainbows, glitter, and junk’ I mentioned earlier? Well, Miracle is probably one of the closest things you’ll find here in the Fey Realm to that. I mean, don't get me wrong, they’re not oblivious; they know the world isn’t that sweet and perfect. Not as much as I do, that is. But they can still see the good in it. I wish that I could still see things like that, but that’s what I love about them, and I wanna protect that idea for them. I want to protect them and all the other Miracles in the world out there from the ugly darkness and cruelty that exists in this world so they still have something to smile about.”
“I’m just saying that the world, every world, I suppose, is a crazy and chaotic place, and when you’re part of the Fairy Law Enforcement like me, no matter how ugly it gets, you've got to keep going so you can protect who you can so they don't have to see the things you do. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I'd like to get home before Miracle goes to bed, and if I'm lucky, dinner might still be on the table.”
