"story": "Name: Dusk on the Open Water (Most just call him Dusk)\nSpecies: Tabaxi\nHeight: 6 ft\nWeight: 145 pounds\nFur: Short haired, Dark gray with thin light gray stripes and a white tuft from\njust under his nose to his throat. Large expressive ears. Long tail.\nWeapons: Dual Scimitars, 4 handaxes in a bandolier across his chest for throwing.\nArmor and clothing: Studded leather, but is wearing a long, oiled, sailors coat\nover it, with a hood that he will put up or down depending on\ncircumstances.\nAnimal Companion: A raven by the name of Bosun Jack, one of the ship's birds during his time as a pirate.\n\nDusk sits on the end of the dock, paws dangling in the ocean, staring off\ntoward the horizon as if into his own past. His life didn’t start on the water,\nbut the ocean has defined most of it. He was the only one among his seven\nbrothers and sisters who never hated the sea. He never really knew why.\nHe was simply always drawn to it. As soon as he was old enough, he\njoined the first crew that would take him.\n\nSomewhere beyond the horizon, he imagines a stretch of quiet water that\ndoesn’t ask anything of him.\n\nHe spent his first few years aboard an official navy ship, until it was taken\nby pirates. As one of the few survivors, he was given a choice: join them, or\nbe left on a deserted island. He joined them. The navy’s strict rules had\nnever suited him, and the pirates’ code aligned more closely with his own.\nThey valued freedom, distrusted the rich and the powerful, and avoided\ncruelty for its own sake. Those who surrendered were given the same\nchoice he had been.\n\nThe Sea Raven defined much of his future, including his choice of\nweapons. The scimitar is formal and reads clearly as a threat when drawn.\nThe handaxes, however, have utility, honesty, and finality. The scimitar is a\nstatement. The handaxes are the punctuation.\n\nHe has long forgotten the name of the navy ship, but he will never forget\nThe Sea Raven. Many of its crew came and went over the years. Most were\nclaimed by raids, boarding actions, storms, sickness, and the many\nbeautiful dangers of the open water. Very few ever left by choice.\n\nEventually, he did.\n\nHe didn’t leave over a dispute or mutiny. He left when he said he was\nleaving. Over years of service, he had proven himself again and again,\nrising to Bosun, the highest authority aboard, beneath the captain. He\nlistened first, hearing out anyone willing to speak. Violence was never his\nfirst answer. But when Dusk smiled, disputes ended shortly thereafter.\n\nLife among ship crews taught him that chaos doesn’t need control. It needs\nsomeone who understands its rhythm, who knows how to read it and\nrecognize when it tips too far. That was Dusk’s role. That’s why when he\nfinally left The Raven, no one tried to stop him. He didn’t start arguments.\nHe ended them.\n\nBy the time he left, most of the crew had never known another Bosun.\nHis crewmates, save one or two, never knew his personal reasons for\nleaving. Everything on the ocean is temporary. Ships, crews, lives. It’s only\na matter of when the sea takes them. Dusk wanted the camaraderie\nwithout the constant chaos. Landbound adventuring suited him better.\n\nHis philosophy didn’t change. He still listens first and acts last.\n\nWith his current companions, he provides stability. They know his tells. If he\nlistens intently while cleaning and sharpening his weapons, all is well. If he\nsmiles and stops cleaning, something is about to happen. If a handaxe is\nalready missing from his bandolier, it has already begun. They know he\nresorts to violence only when restraint is no longer viable.\n\nHis face and reputation are known in most port towns, and often in inland\ntaverns as well. He and his raven, Bosun Jack, are a familiar presence. Not famous. Not feared. Trusted.\n\nWhen not traveling with his companions, he can usually be found at the\ndocks, or in the rowdiest taverns. Both remind him of life aboard ship, at\nleast the good parts."
