Submitted character story

You are the kind of hero who plays the long game, favoring patience over spectacle the way a Quiet Strategist must. What you remembered when darkness came for you was not the violence itself, but the silence after, the choice hunger forced upon you. You carry the knowledge that you have already crossed lines others still fear, that survival sometimes demands prices civilized people refuse to name. The table will remember you as the one who never flinched, who understood that magic is just another tool for those willing to use it.

Defining moment: Raiders came not from the sea, but from inland—iron-clad, torch-bearing, efficient. Dominic remembered the sound more than anything: wood splitting, people screaming, something heavy being dragged across stone. He hid beneath the warped floorboards of his family’s home, pressing his face into the dust to keep from breathing too loudly. Through the cracks, he saw boots. Blood followed.
He waited until morning.
When he crawled out, the village was ash and silence. Bodies lay where they’d fallen, picked over already by birds that had come faster than grief. Dominic called out for anyone—his parents, neighbors, even the sage—but no one answered.
No one living, anyway.
It was hunger that drove him to the cliffs.
The sage’s hut still stood, untouched. That alone should have warned him. Inside, the air was thick and briny, like the sea had somehow seeped into the stone. The sage lay on the floor, unmoving, his skin drawn tight against his bones like dried kelp.
Dominic knew what death looked like now. He also knew what hunger felt like.
The first bite made him retch.
But he swallowed.
