Crorhan Celes

Dwarf / Wizard

Crorhan Celes

Submitted character story

A dwarf of middling age, Crorhan Celes is the ship's wizard on the merchant sailing vessel Hereward. He's held this position a number of years, and is one of the longest standing members of the crew. Only the bosun and one or two others have been onboard longer.

As one might expect of a wizard on a sailing ship, Crorhan's magics concentrate on elemental manipulations of water and weather - he might even be mistaken in effect for a maritime druid except his spells come from diligent study and research, rather than the channeling of natural energies. He can't summon or ward against storms, but he can help coax a breeze into something stronger, and he can protect the ship itself from the harshest elements, lessening, if not nullifying severity. He's also a bit of a runic maven. If the Hereward might be considered a sturdy and stalwart vessel, it is thanks in no small part to the inscriptions Crorhan has painted onto, and sometimes carved into the timbers of the ship that strengthen the joins and help keep the ship water tight

Crorhan is tall and thin for a dwarf, and is sometimes mistaken for a human of small stature. But his deep, formal voice, noble hook nose, and somewhat crusty demeanor tend to make his lineage plain. When Mavdes Yuvari, a young Hal'atir joined the Hereward crew, the captain consulted him about possible magical risks from someone with her heritage. Crorhan assurances were key to Mavdes being allowed to join, and he watched over the young sailor as she trained as crew, lookout and apprentice navigator. When Mavdes' latent magical abilities began to reveal themselves, Crorhan slowly but surely became a teacher and mentor, helping her learn the very beginning of her power.

Crorhan's use of magic tends to be subtle and understated, but can, when needed draw upon some real power. He loathes taking lives, though understands and accepts the necessity sometimes. He has a deep and growing understanding of "pocket spaces" - pouches that can hold many times their apparent volume, rooms that are bigger on the inside, doors that open to *elsewhere*. These spaces, he knows, are insults to reality, and sometimes reality lashes out through them, especially if one is careless with them.
