It took only one day for his world to come crumbling. He was supposed to be home. It was just one day; nothing was supposed to happen. But he came home to an empty house, a barren field, and a quiet barn with only a cold body to inhabit it.

She was his last living family. His aunt, the one who raised him, the one he called Ma. He was supposed to be home. He was supposed to be there. He was supposed to protect her. It was supposed to be him.

He arrives before the trouble does now, because he knows what happens when he doesn't.

I've been digging in the dirt

But the world softened when he saw her. Soft blue skin marred by faded battles; flowing white hair reminiscent of winter's first snowfall; sparkling blue eyes, silently telling him that everything will be okay before the words ever left her mouth.
