Submitted character story
This was my first character. He's always held a special place for me. For all the deeds he accomplished, and all those he did his best to mitigate disaster when nothing could be done, there is no better showcase for who he was than the day he set out, talked through with my older cousin when he was introducing me to the game nearly 30 years ago...
Opening the large box his father's workers had brought in, Caladus looked over the contents, pulling them out one by one.
"As my third son, you're entitled to nothing. But, your mother made me swear I'd care for any child she bore me, the same as I would for the children of my first wife. Clearly, you cannot inherit any part of my trade. Your brothers have held it for nearly a decade and it would be wrong to take from them to support you after all their work."
Caladus nodded along, but had already begun donning the contents of the box.
"I am pleased, however, you asked for so little to set out. I wish you the best. Especially since I cannot permit your return should you fail to find your place in this world."
The chainmail fit well, the tabard matched the motif of the god he strived to serve and the longsword felt
comfortable on his hip.
"And, naturally, you are forbidden to use the family name. We cannot be associated with adventuring rabble. Bad for business, you understand."
With a nod, Caladus left his home and his childhood on the sunny morning of his 18th birthday, his younger sisters there to see him off.
He stole one last look at his family, offered a smile and a wave.
It may not have seemed like a good day to most, but this was the best gift Caladus had ever received.
Duty is the greatest asset one can hold.
