"story": "Beryl is a gem (Emerald) dragon who, ages ago, cursed herself into an ignorant human life to hide from a Far Realm mind-hunter; a terrible, powerful entity that finds and devours its prey by their psyches, and has a particular taste for dragons. Becoming humanoid, and forgetting why, was the whole point: it made her invisible to the thing that hunts her. She kept just enough memory to know a threat exists and that she must grow strong beyond her psyche to face it. The irony of her journey is that every step toward power thins her veil and lights her beacon, drawing the confrontation nearer.\n\nShe is a \"Monk,\" but never trained in a monastery, never staying in one place long enough to become rooted or be recorded. She is self-taught and itinerant, learning a strike from a dockworker, a balanced stance from a heron, a rhythm from the tide. The secret beneath it all is her latent gem-dragon psionics unconsciously reading the muscle-memory of everyone she watches, so she learns any physical art uncannily fast - and doesn't know that's why. The natural world is her teacher, and it will likely be those very lessons that ultimately expose her.\n\nHer journey alone kept her alive; but as her veil begins to thin, as her draconic self begins to break through, she will need the companionship of and trust in others to *win*. The hunter kills lone dragons. Beryl's life was solitary concealment; her party of companions has become the first place she stays, with equals at her side. They have their own stories and arcs, but they are what will let a single dragon beat a foe that eats solitary wyrms. \n\nHer very name is an early testament to this bond. Beryl is a wanderer's borrow, the faintest memory of what she once was. Truevein was given to her by her companions. Balgrin Durstansson Blackkettle, the Anvilbreaker - the party's dwarven warrior started it: \"ye can't just have the one name; when they sing yer song they've to know who they're singin' about\" — and Fen (Fenwick Larkspur) the halfling bard was the one who actually chose Truevein, in the dwarven style, to honor Balgrin for being right. FOr his part, Balgrin is tickled but grumbles it's \"too fancy\" for what he had in mind (he'd have gone with something like Stonekettle, and says so often). To dwarves the name is high praise (a true vein of ore is genuine, reliable, worth a clan's honor). Beryl's true draconic name is lost to the curse and is her quest-object; her curse can only be removed with the power of her true name.\n\nPhysically, Beryl is an utterly normal looking, slightly built human woman, very pale, with whitish hair with hints and glints of emerald. Her draconic heritage shows in unnatural swiftness, a skin much tougher than it looks, and other manifestations that have only grown as she advances. Her unarmed fighting skills have the power - and sometimes the apparition of draconic claws or talons. Her psychic powers and ki-like pool tap into that core as well."
