Archivist

Submitted character story

Archivist has had many names, many titles throughout Eldest's incarnations. He is the portion of the mind that creates, that takes both imagination, memory, and the world around them, and forges something from it. In this iteration, he is Archivist, a collector, a monitor, a keeper of secrets and stories, in others, he has been a painter, or a writer, or a singer, or a smith, or a bowyer. All creation is from which he stems, and this time, he is The Archivist.

He was the first to feel the beginnings of the shattering, the splintering of Eldest's consciousness. Archivist had been abroad once more, searching for new stories, new pieces to add to the archive when it began, and he felt his brothers and sisters fall into slumber. He was always the first to awake and knew that even he had been out for a while. As he felt himself shift from an old god's waking dream to a living being once more, he felt the magic of the worldshard he was on reach for him, another thing for it to register and help track. As it settled into him he felt it decide, put him into the box of a wizard, and then hesitate, then tack on warlock as if it was a consolation prize. As the power settled, he checked, realizing he'd been placed at the first specialization of this world, annoying, but it would do. The others would wake up later, most likely stronger as well, but without his memory, so he'd have to grow and find them quickly. Summoning his book and the portal to the Archive, he was relieved to find both appeared without trouble, yet much of his book was under seal, it seemed he would have to return to simple spells and curses.
Then something shifted, something he'd felt before, when Eldest's mind was whole, but had thankfully never happened during a shattering. A trickle of fear raced through him, the first in millennia. There had been multiple shatterings, multiple regatherings and rebirths, but never this. IT was stirring. Searching through the already fading bonds, he found the chains, the clockwork prison, the blinding light and eternal depthless ocean, every shattered word and carefully kept debt that bound it, and he found them shifting as well, eroding in the way they did when he needed to be released.
Searching through them again he realized something new though, it would be stronger, but it would also take much much longer to truly awaken, and due to the shattering the bonds that would usually be turned back on them, as prisons for the guards, they would be to hollow, to week to act as conduits, so it would be limited to what it had left from last time. Moving his attention away again, Archivist was about to begin his search as he felt the worldshards' power reaching for each of them, including it, and he saw something even worse, the barest stirrings of consciousness, just enough for it to latch onto that power.
The timetable had been moved up; if he didn't find the rest and reforge them back into a whole, it would consume it all, and it might become permanent this time.
He was The Archivist, and it was time to rebuild the story.
