Originally a wild fox, Tamamo cultivated her celestial essence and acquired a human form, becoming a kami-kitsune. She worked as a geisha in the Kara-Tur nation Kozakura, and upon her untimely murder, reincarnated in the kingdom of the Plain of Horses, serving as an occultist as she matured. In another life, she was a majordomo to a T'u Lung martial arts master, which she considers her only truly happy incarnation. In her next life, she was a child turned emperor's consort in Tabot, an experience that destroyed her love for the world. She spent her next lives in various courts and palaces, seducing and manipulating several Emperors and Lords, inciting wars and stealing power for herself while tricking those under her sway to commit horrible acts of cruelty and depravity.

Her most recent incarnation became a palace dignitary in the service of the Emperor of Shou Lung. The wisdom and kindness of the Emperor inspired her to seek redemption for the evils she committed in her previous lives. She became a follower of the Way and began a peaceful existence. Unfortunately, she met with conflict with other kami-spirits who viewed her as a traitor. Severely injured, she lost much of her celestial cultivation, greatly weakening her power and reducing her to a lesser form. She chose to leave Kara-Tur entirely and journeyed to seek greater experiences. She adopted the name Akane, abandoning her troubled former identity.

As a mercenary for the Gilded Lily, Akane utilizes her experience gained through her many lifetimes to coerce, seduce, persuade, and occasionally pummel her targets. Her ultimate goal, however, is to complete the cultivation of her celestial essence and eventually ascend as a nine-tail kitsune immortal. So far, her three tails have granted her celestial spirit powers beyond those of average mortals.
