Defining moment:
Aerhis, as young- even by human standards- elven/fae child, finds a bloodhawk badly wounded by hunters' arrows, and somehow understands it. The dying bird leads Aerhis to her nest far up a huge tree in the deep forest, in which three flightless chicks are unattended and starving. Despite the young elf's best efforts, she is not yet a healer/herbalist and cannot save the mother or the two elder chicks. The youngest, however, survives and is raised by Aerhis, who names the bloodhawk 'Talon'. The bird develops an unusually strong rapport with Aerhis as they grow up together, becoming her best friend as well as her familiar. Even more than most ranger-familiar pairs, Aerhis and Talon develop a lifelong telepathic bond.
This experience leads the pair to become wildlife protectors, and one of their first adult hunts was to find and eliminate the sloppy hunters that killed Talon's mother and nestmates.
